My mother had the warm chicken salad with beetroot, tomatoes and haloumi, while I opted for an old favourite: the AUD19 chicken and mushroom risotto with candied walnuts and truffle oil.
While I adore haloumi (thanks to Sideways), my mother does not like it at all. Needless to say, she ate it all- that is the standard of The Corner's lunch menu and cooking. Although an enjoyable salad (fit for a warm winter's day), mum faulted the dish for lacking chicken, which is the title ingredient of the meal as appears on the menu.
I have had the featured risotto many times and it never fails to deliver. The candied walnuts are deliciously sweet- although not so much as usual- and the varied mushrooms and truffle oil makes the dish memorable. I love risotto, especially this one; I just wished it was a summer meal as well.
Despite the amazing food, I don't really rate the service at The Corner. It is slow, the waiters are generally unfriendly and fail to personalise visits to the restaurant (and I have been there a lot)! Menus are usually especially slow in arriving at the table and the tap water served is always warm, and thus not refreshing as water should be. The menu is also slightly pricey- especially for dinner- but the restaurant attempts to use local produce and assures customers that only quality products are used. And, as I said, the food is usually excellent.
Campos coffee is served, as well as a vast selection of T2 teas. The coffee is generally smooth and I have never had a bad cup.
The Corner used to be my favourite restaurant in Port Macquarie, but has now been overtaken by Fusion7 (which I am paying a visit to tomorrow night). Stay tuned.
The Corner can be found at 11 Clarence Street Port Macquarie and is open seven days.
